IEP or 504: Which Are We Heading Toward?

A practical screen. Not a substitute for an evaluation. Use to gather your thoughts before you call the school.

  1. Has your child been diagnosed with anxiety, ADHD, autism, learning disability, or sensory processing disorder?
  2. Is your child's anxiety affecting their access to instruction (missing class, refusing to attend, cannot perform on tests)?
  3. Has the school already tried general accommodations and they didn't work?
  4. Does your child need specially designed instruction (not just accommodations), for example explicit instruction in a learning skill?
  5. Has the teacher mentioned concerns more than once?
  6. Is the gap between potential and performance widening?
  7. Have you put concerns in writing to the school yet?
  8. Do you know the difference between accommodations and modifications?
  9. Do you know your state's IEP timeline (referral to evaluation to meeting)?
  10. Are you ready for a meeting where the team disagrees with you?
